Cooran State School

Music

Music at Cooran State School is firstly  a fun time (at least the teacher thinks so).

Each class has  a half hour lesson a week during which we do a variety of activities, including singing, playing instruments, games and movement all working toward skill development in rhythm and pitch.

Lessons are influenced by the Kodaly system where the student develops a concept of sound and rhythm within, using hand sign symbols to represent pitch and names to say rhythms. This in middle primary leads to representing music on paper. We generally connect activities and songs to the current class unit. We also have a very keen music man in Mr Melink who introduces his class to playing recorder and sings with them daily. We have opportunities to play keyboard and glocks and xylophones as well as other percussion at various stages of the years’ lessons. We also have  a small but very keen group of singers who make beautiful music.

At present we meet 11 a.m. Tuesday and new members are very welcome. This year we are looking forward to integrating activities with our choir and band members and hopefully some other small schools. Our band program is growing fast under the direction of Ms Collis and they sound fantastic.
